I saw this photo on the Internet and whilst I don’t know a huge amount practically about breeding, caring for pregnant mares and so on, I thought this photo describes the position of the foal inside the mare just prior to birth very well. It certainly helps get your head around how those long limbs fold away inside the abdomen!

    It looks like the foal is twisted through the spine. I wonder if the position in the womb determines which way the horse will find it easy to bend when it’s older

      That’s an interesting thought. They tend to be left handed or right handed so it could well impact their natural carriage. I was more interested in how the foal squeezes into such a relatively small space.
